Why is that? What's good about a way to identify every single citizen from meters away, from a privacy point of view?

A member of parliament recently said that we'd have to make sacrifices in privacy for increased security. I couldn't disagree more. There is a tradeoff, sure, but if we give away all our freedom in order to protect our freedom, we've done something wrong. We're on a slippery slope here.

Luckily, after the RFID chips just barely passed the vote, the centralized database containing all citizen's data (fingerprints and all) was dropped from the proposal. That's at least something. Still, all the inherent security problems make this way more hassle than worth.

(Also, my apologies for removing that link of yours. I might even have left it in, if it weren't for that JavaScript popup nastiness crap. I hate hate hate obtrusive advertising, and certainly won't support it with link juice.)
