Yay, I finished the marines for the Doom boardgame before the LAN party tomorrow!

The Cyberdemons and the Spider Queens didn’t make it, but rushing them (or the marines) would be a pity, I’ll rather paint them well with ample time after the weekend.

Without further ado, here’s the whole bunch of the marines. I took Space Marine Scout miniatures from Warhammer 40k for them, as they just have waay more detail than the ones that came with the game itself.

Doom Marines

All the details did take their toll, time-wise, I spent close to 20 hours on them. But considering they’re the good guys and the only minis the marine players will ever control, they better look good.

I made individual pictures of the three strike teams (red, green, blue), have a look at them here:

Red Marines

Blue Marines

Green Marines

Note how they’re quite a bit cleaner (looks-wise) than the other minis – I didn’t drybrush a bit here. That and the strong color palette emphasizes a bit that they’re the good guys, I hope.

Time to relax now

Still, here they are, in all their glory. They’re one of the strongest monsters of the Doom boardgame, and I tried to make them look the part. Six Hellknights.

6 Hellknights

Now the next thing definitely has to be the marines, as the Cyberdemons don’t appear until the second mission of the game, and the Spider Queens only show up in the expansion levels – and that’s the only three things left to paint for the game.

I didn’t go for the Marines after all, I’m a bit scared of all their details and whatnot. Instead, I tackled the Hellknights – and made good progress so far. So good in fact that the first one is already painted:

Hellknight

Hellknights Progress

The others aren’t exactly as far, as you can see in the picture to the left. Right behind them, the line of paints, are the colors they’ll get from this stage onward – the bodies got a deep red base (after the black coat) and some washes already, next will be two layers of skin drybrushing, a layer of skin wash, and then the dark red drybrush for the head. The colors to the left of those mentioned I’ll use for detail work (eyes, mouth and teeth, base).

Hellknight Back

On the Hellknight’s back, you see why so many layers make sense, too. In some spots, the leather-y color from the first skin drybrush still shows through, while in others the more pink second skin drybrush is more prevalent. The crotch area is darker than the surroundings (it’s where the mud wash was applied), and the red base still shines through in less deep skin trenches.

I hope to finish the others later today.

If you know Doom, you know Archviles. They’re the big guys in the back who pelt you from afar with fire and flame. So, of course, they’re in the board game as well. Here goes:

No prototype this time as well, I painted the whole group of 6 at once. The arms ended up with 7 layers of paint, to bring out the glowiness a bit, I hope it kinda worked.

I hope to have everything painted by January 2nd, as that’s when I plan to take the whole bunch along to a LAN party we’re having. It doesn’t look all too bad right now, there’s only Hellknights, Cyberdemons, Spider Queens and the marines to go now.

I do think however that the next thing I’ll tackle will be the marines, to make sure they’re ready.

I decided against reworking all the bases (as was suggested in the prototype picture’s BoardGameGeek thread), and for going with my current scheme of only having either dark red dragging marks or bright red blood splatters. It doesn’t look too bad for the whole group of minis, and ties them together nicely.

Yet again, yours truly didn’t find what I really wanted when browsing the extensive files section that the BoardGameGeek has in store for the Doom boardgame (aah, Flash with sound!). So yet again, I created a little player aid of my own, procrastinating from learning for Uni as I were.

This is what came out of it: Yet Another Doom Math Sheet, v. 1.1

It is, basically, a little statistical breakdown of a few values (average, median, minimum, maximum) for a couple variables (range, damage) for each of a marine’s weapons and each invader’s demon. It might help players decide to punch a Trite over trying to shoot it with the pistol, from close range – or at least, that is my hope.

It also goes to show how different some medians are from their respective averages, which is the interesting part.

Tell me if you find it useful, or if you’d change something

This is the first time I’m blogging a prototype before the whole minis series is painted – you can imagine how much I like how it turned out by that maybe Here’s my first painted Doom Mancubus:

Mancubus (Front)

By the way, I deactivated the Lightbox plugin – it broke the “Back” button, which nothing on a web page should do, ever.

Mancubus (Right Side)

Mancubus (Back)

Anyway, the skin here has first a dark brown base, then four (!) layers of drybrushing, another layer for the face, then a wash, and another layer for the face. I think it was worth it, though.

The weapons and backpack have a Boltgun Metal base, then two layers of black wash (to create the illusion of more details, as the model doesn’t have that many there), then a Boltgun Metal drybrush and finally some copper highlights. I didn’t want to paint the tubes in another (more screaming) color, as I like my Mancubi gritty.

The weapon’s muzzles finally were painted in a blueish grey and then drybrushed with white, plus a little highlight.

Oh, another note, all my images are available in a higher resolution on the Geek, too. If you feel like giving me a thumbs up there, you make me happy

(I will slow down with painting today and tomorrow, as I have this examn on Friday – wish me luck )

Detail Shot

Which is great really, as it allows (and asks) for more detail in the finished miniature. Nevertheless, I still kept the painting time rather short, forfeiting some of those possibilities – for example, I skipped painting their headsets, they’re barely visible anymore now and look kinda like the zombies’ ears.

Anyway, here are the zombie commandos, guarding a room against the evil marines that want to spoil all plans of taking over and destroying the earth as we know it.

Silly marines.

If you don’t feel like following my painting progress, just ignore this and the next couple posts – I have about 6 more kinds of miniatures to paint before my Doom collection is completely painted Edit: I counted, it’s 8

Anyway, here come the imps!

Imps

Do you want to guess what color the imps were in Doom 3? Yay, you’re right, they were grey! So … I yet again went with the color scheme from the previous Dooms (although I did compromise and made them at least a bit grey) and now have brown imps.

Those guys were a lot easier to paint than others, largely because they have basically just one kind of region – skin. The claws and details differ, obviously, but everything else is just skin, allowing me to forego all caution when drybrushing and washing, liberally applying paint everywhere…
