Entirely agreed, Vince. Although with a bit of php knowledge, such elaborate themes aren’t really necessary – I can hack all I want directly in the source :p

Well, actually it seems like Thesis is not the only problem. There are several WP developers like Headway, Ultimate blogging theme and several more are in the Market.

I hope there will be someone who will try to develop these kinds of themes for free. I know one, Atahualpa, but it is not so friendly compared to Ultimate Blogging Theme and Thesis.

Calling all WP developers… please develop themes like these that are FREE… This is the only way to fight the paid themes.

I have been monitoring whole #thesiswp debate. Though being a Thesis skin dev. I still believe Matt was right till a point. Though the way he reacted on twitter was far away from professionalism and least expected from him. I will rather wait to see Matt filing a lawsuit against Thesis if he things he is also right legally.

@Vince I’m not a lawyer, and the solution for me is boycotting companies like that, not supporting their products, even if I’d be using them in a somewhat gray area. Also, until there was a process in your jurisdiction, there’s no true answer to your question. No clue whether either side plans to stress one, and who pays for what if they do.

But, all the evidence points towards the terms of use of Thesis being illegal for the Wordpress context they’re used in. So if they’d stress a process, you’d probably stand a good chance of winning it. If you can afford it, get a good lawyer,don’t use any of the pictures and bits which don’t need to fall under the GPL, etc. etc.

In other words, it would probably be legal to use without paying, but don’t take my word for it, and don’t hold me accountable

Oh, and apologies that my answer comes so late…

So, please clarify me. Does it mean that it is completely legal to use Thesis Theme even without buying it?

I have downloaded a Thesis Theme from a Torrent Site. I tested it. I love the adds on feature, I love the way it looks, but really, I am hesitant to use it on my site because I don’t want to be violating any copyrights.

Please advice. Thank you very much!!!

AS long as I am concerned thesis will violate GPL terms….Many web developers who use their thesis for the clients are not aware of their clients when it comes to codes…
